In Tagalog, baon can mean “food taken to school, work, or on a journey.” Filipinos often provide and prepare baon for their loved ones to show care and companionship. Particularly in Asian culture, these emotions and displays of affection can be uncomfortable or difficult to express through more direct means like verbal or written word. Regardless, the desire for connection still lingers.
BAON is the material manifestation of the love we send through food we share with friends and family. The gestural conversations we have through the exchange of food imbue our memories and identities in ways that remain with us, deepening the idiosyncratic meanings these dishes hold. Without even realizing it, simple snacks and homemade meals become timeless capsules of human experience that intertwine with that of others. This project is a snapshot of my own time capsule of food and their messages that will never lose their warmth.
